01 / Dedicated batch clipping
OpusClip
Start here when you already have long recordings and want a dedicated clipping workflow. OpusClip’s selection, reframing, and publishing features make it a practical first shortlist candidate—not a proven winner on every source.
Features that matter for clipping
- ClipAnything considers speech, visual action, and audio signals.
- Pro adds scheduling and export to Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve.
Price & plan fit
Starter is $15 billed monthly. Pro is $29 billed monthly, or $174 billed annually ($14.50/month equivalent) with 3,600 credits available for the year.
Before you choose: Free exports have a watermark and a three-day export window. Check the tier when you need multiple aspect ratios or an editable professional handoff.
02 / Transcript-led editorial control
Descript
Shortlist Descript when the long episode and its clips need careful editing in the same project. It suits editors who want to work with the words, not simply accept an automatic shortlist.
Features that matter for clipping
- Create Clips works alongside text-based video editing.
- Studio Sound and filler-word removal support spoken-content cleanup.
Price & plan fit
Hobbyist costs $24 per person on monthly billing, or $16 per person/month with annual billing. Creator is $35 monthly or $24/month annually and adds 4K exports.
Before you choose: Media hours and AI credits are separate allowances. Having source hours left does not necessarily mean you have enough credits for every AI operation.
03 / Recording through to clips
Riverside
Riverside is a logical fit when you need to record interviews or podcasts as well as repurpose them. Compare the value of the whole recording workflow, not only its clipping feature.
Features that matter for clipping
- Magic Clips selects highlights automatically; transcript editing supports manual selections.
- Pro combines recording, text-based editing, and repurposing tools.
Price & plan fit
Pro is $29 on monthly billing or $288 annually ($24/month equivalent). Grow is $39 monthly or $34/month with annual billing.
Before you choose: First-party pages disagree about ongoing free access. The newer trial article describes a 14-day trial that requires a card and converts to paid; confirm your signup terms.
04 / Chat-directed clip refinement
Captions.ai
Consider Captions when you want to direct another pass through a recording by topic, speaker, or tone. Its Clips workflow combines moment selection with styled, reframed outputs.
Features that matter for clipping
- Prompt for another set of moments, then manually trim candidates.
- The feature page describes horizontal and vertical framing and support for multi-speaker footage.
Price & plan fit
The September 14 help update lists Max at $29.99/month with 500 credits and Clips included. Basic, formerly Pro, is $9.99/month but is not the listed Clips tier. Scale is $69.99/month with 1,400 credits.
Before you choose: Older marketing pages show different plan details. Use the current subscription guide and confirm the price, device support, and Clips access before paying.
05 / Upload-minute-based planning
KLAP
KLAP belongs on the shortlist when your main job is turning uploaded or linked videos into social clips. The supplied pricing screenshot bases plans on uploaded minutes rather than the number of generated clips.
Features that matter for clipping
- Automatic selection, reframing, and caption customization.
- The current pricing page lists social accounts and analytics across its plans.
Price & plan fit
On annual billing, Basic is $14/month for 300 upload minutes per month, Pro is $39/month for 900 minutes, and Pro+ is $94/month for 2,700 minutes. The supplied pricing screenshot advertises unlimited AI clipping within the upload allowance. These are annual-plan equivalents, not month-to-month prices.
Before you choose: Budget around source minutes, not output clip count. Confirm how repeat uploads count and check the monthly toggle if you do not want an annual commitment.
06 / Clipping plus short-form polish
Submagic
Submagic is worth considering when you want to style the selected clips with captions, B-roll, and effects. Budget for the clipping add-on as well as the editor.
Features that matter for clipping
- Magic Clips accepts long-form sources and generates candidates.
- Transcript and timeline adjustments sit alongside caption and visual customization.
Price & plan fit
Starter costs $19/member/month; Pro is $39 and Business $69 on monthly billing. The help page lists Magic Clips at an additional $19/month, making Starter plus that add-on $38/month for one member before applicable taxes.
Before you choose: Do not confuse the base editor’s video quota with the Magic Clips allowance. Confirm source duration and the combined package for your workload.
07 / Clipping and social publishing
Vizard
Vizard combines automatic clip selection with an editor and social publishing. It is relevant when clips need to move from review into scheduled distribution, or when collaborators need a shared workflow.
Features that matter for clipping
- AI highlights, reframing, captions, and text-based editing.
- Creator adds scheduling; Business adds a shared workspace and brand kit.
Price & plan fit
The supplied pricing screenshot shows Creator at $14.50/month ($174 billed yearly) and Business at $19.50/month ($234 billed yearly), each at the selected 7,200-credits/year tier. One credit equals one video minute. Business lists additional members at $5/month per seat. Free remains $0 with 60 credits/month.
Before you choose: These paid prices are annual-plan equivalents for the selected usage tier, not monthly-billed rates. Confirm usage, additional seats, and renewal terms at checkout. Free exports carry a watermark.
08 / Lower-cost spoken-video clipping
2short.ai
2short.ai is a lower-entry-price option for speech-led videos such as tutorials and commentary. Its stated dependence on spoken words and captions makes the source material especially important.
Features that matter for clipping
- Facial tracking, animated subtitles, and manual crop controls.
- Vertical, square, and horizontal layouts with 1080p exports.
Price & plan fit
Lite is $9.90/month for five analysis hours. Pro is $19.90 for 15 hours; Premium is $49.90 for 50 hours. Lite separately limits fast server-side exports to 60 minutes/month.
Before you choose: The site’s free-plan card says 30 analysis minutes, while its footer says 15. Confirm the allowance in your account. Speech-free action footage is not its stated strength.
Make the shortlist yours
How to choose the best AI clipping software for your footage
Choose the workflow first, then compare plans. A tool that edits a finished podcast and a tool that also records the interview may justify different budgets.
Already have long recordings?
Compare dedicated clipping workflows such as OpusClip and KLAP. Add Vizard if scheduled publishing or shared workspaces matter.
Need to revise the actual story?
Shortlist Descript for word-level editing. Consider Captions if directing another selection pass through chat fits how you work.
Need recording as well?
Evaluate Riverside against the cost and handoffs of your existing recording setup. Do not pay twice for capabilities you already have.
Is caption and visual styling the bottleneck?
Compare the finishing controls in Submagic and Captions. Include the required add-on or AI tier in the price.
For speech-free action, request a trial on that exact footage. For tutorials, check that crops keep the demonstration visible. For interviews, check speaker changes and overlapping speech. A polished demo does not establish fit for your material.
A useful buying calculation
Compare cost per accepted clip—not just the subscription.
Use the same representative recording in two shortlisted tools. Keep the same brief, desired format, and acceptance criteria. Count only clips you would actually publish.
Illustrative arithmetic / not a vendor benchmark
The $30 allocation is an example, not a quoted plan. Include rejected-clip review time. If no clips pass, cost per accepted clip is undefined—not zero.
A cheaper subscription can cost more per publishable clip if the edits take longer. That is a question to test, not a conclusion about any product here.
- Choose representative footage.Include the speech, visual action, speaker changes, or screen detail you normally edit.
- Review the exported candidates.Check complete meaning, captions, cut boundaries, framing, and export quality.
- Record time and acceptance.Separate hands-on review from processing waits. Note what you rejected and why.
- Check the actual package.Confirm source limits, retries, seats, watermarks, storage, and cancellation terms before committing annually.

Common buying questions
Which clipping software should a beginner try first?
For an existing spoken recording, start with one dedicated clipper such as OpusClip or KLAP and compare its candidates with a manually chosen segment. If you already edit in Descript or record in Riverside, try the clipping workflow there before adding another subscription.
Is free clipping software enough?
It may be enough to assess selection quality, but not necessarily for regular publishing. Check watermarks, export windows, resolution, and whether the offer is a recurring free plan or a trial. The product notes above flag known limitations and conflicting terms.
Are AI credits comparable across tools?
No. A credit may represent a source minute or a particular AI operation; another vendor may count generated clips instead. Compare the volume you can process and publish under the specific plan, not the raw credit number.
Can any tool guarantee viral clips?
No tool in this comparison has been shown here to guarantee virality. Treat vendor scores as suggestions for review, not calibrated probabilities of views or revenue.
How this comparison was researched
HypeVideo helps creators understand video production and repurposing. We selected eight tools with documented long-to-short clipping features, including the requested OpusClip, Descript, Riverside, Captions.ai, and KLAP. This page does not compare game-capture utilities or rank every video editor.
We reviewed official feature, pricing, and support pages on September 17, 2026, then updated KLAP and Vizard using user-supplied screenshots of their pricing pages. Selection criteria were source fit, editorial control, workflow coverage, billing structure, and limitations. The use-case recommendations are our interpretation of those documents; list order is not a measured quality ranking.
We did not run hands-on output tests or award numerical scores. Links are direct vendor links with no affiliate tracking added. Prices and feature eligibility can change, so verify the selected plan before purchase.
Pricing discrepancies we did not hide
- Captions: the September 14 subscription update supersedes older Pro/Max descriptions for this comparison.
- Riverside: the pricing page and newer free-trial explanation differ on ongoing free access. We quote Pro pricing, not a promised free entitlement.
- KLAP: the supplied screenshot of the pricing page shows upload-minute allowances, replacing the clip-count values previously retrieved.
- Vizard: the supplied screenshot of the pricing selector confirms the annual Creator and Business prices at 7,200 credits/year. Monthly-billed rates were not shown.
- 2short.ai: its pricing card and footer list different free allowances. We do not silently choose one.
